- Medical Hospitalist at psychiatric facility
Description
Family Practice / FP Nurse Practitioner — Inpatient Medical
Santa Rosa, CA Part-time Independent Contractor (1099)
THE ROLE
Seeking a Family Practice NP to perform histories and physicals and provide medical management for patients admitted to an acute care psychiatric hospital. The clinical work is primary care and internal medicine in scope — the context is that patients are psychiatrically impaired and hospitalized for serious reasons: grave disability, major depressive disorder, active psychosis, or danger to self or others. NPs who are comfortable working with this population will find it a clinically engaging environment. Medically unstable patients are transferred to a local ED; this is not a critical care position.
PATIENT POPULATION & FACILITY
The hospital operates 7 inpatient units with approximately 140 beds, spanning varying degrees of psychiatric acuity. Currently one unit is dedicated to adolescent patients ages 13–17; the remaining units serve adults. Candidates should be comfortable working with all age groups 13 and above, as H&Ps and medical management are required at all units.
COMPENSATION
$70 per H&P $45 per consult
Productivity-based pay reflecting current Northern California market rates for independent contractor NP work. Shifts typically run 5–10 hours depending on admission volume, with many providers finishing by early afternoon. Approximately 10 shifts per month available.
Average shift: ~13 H&Ps (range typically 8–18) Typical shift earnings: ~$910 On high-volume days, the supervising physician provides additional support if requested so no provider is left carrying an unmanageable load alone.
SUPERVISION & SUPPORT
NPs work under the direction of a board-certified emergency physician with 52 years of clinical experience, who is available by phone 24/7 for medical decision-making support if requested. This is a genuinely collaborative working arrangement.
