Come join our team!  The 40-hours per week Cleaning Specialist is responsible for cleaning and sanitation services at McWane Science Center in downtown Birmingham. Position will perform light and heavy cleaning services that support daily operations in a cheerful attentive manner.

Main job duties include mopping and vacuuming floors, emptying trash containers, disinfecting and replenishing supplies in restrooms and cleaning stations, wiping down fixtures and exhibits, collecting and transporting recycling materials, cleaning lunchrooms and communicating maintenance issues to supervisor.

This position is primarily scheduled to work Monday through Friday from 9AM until 6PM OR 10AM until 7PM.  Additional evening hours may be required throughout the year. 

Minimum Qualifications
1. High School diploma or GED/equivalent.
2. Possess 2 years’ experience with cleaning/maintenance of a public facility.
3. Possess knowledge of/be able to properly use various tools and equipment in order to achieve desired cleaning/maintenance results.
4. Ability to work flexible hours including some nights and holidays.
5. Organized and efficient work habits.
6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
7. Dependable and honest.
8. Team player.

Minimum Physical Qualifications
1. Must be able to access any area of the museum quickly, including stairs, catwalks and ladders.
2. Must be able to lock and unlock doors and heavy gates.
3. Must be able to climb 8-10 ft. ladders, to dust, pull pins, manipulate various devices, push open hatches, etc.
4. Must be able to pull the pin on a fire extinguisher and use it effectively.
5. Must be able to communicate and enunciate clearly with portable radios.
6. Must be able to stand, walk, climb steps and be mobile for 6-8 hours per day.
7. Must be able to push, pull and lift 50 lbs.
8. Must be able to manipulate cleaning machinery, buffer, vacuum cleaner, etc.
9. Visual and hearing acuity.
10. Exposure to chemicals, fumes and vapors that could potentially affect the health of the employee.
