Position Summary

The Department of Large Animal Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia, is seeking candidates for a clinical-track faculty position in large animal surgery at the rank of Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor. The successful candidate will join three other large animal surgeons on the daytime elective large animal surgery service. The caseload is approximately 85% equine, the remainder being primarily small ruminants, companion pigs, new world camelids, and cattle. The surgery service is currently supported by three to four surgery residents and four rotating interns shared with other hospital services. In addition to the members of the surgery service, there are six internal medicine clinicians, three double boarded surgery/emergency criticalists, and two anesthesiologists in the Large Animal In-house Section. The service is also supported by members of the Field Services Section with interest and certifications in dentistry, sports medicine and rehabilitation, surgery, diagnostic imaging, theriogenology, and production medicine.

Faculty assignment will be based on the interests of the candidate in conjunction with the missions of the unit. As a clinical track faculty position, the candidate will be expected to be on the large animal surgery service providing clinical instruction and service approximately 65-70% of the year. The majority of this service is daytime elective service with occasional emergency duty afterhours.

1. Instruction: The successful candidate will participate in the department's relevant clinical rotations, as well as didactic and laboratory courses commensurate with clinical track

appointment. Instructional responsibilities in the discipline are shared with the other six board certified large animal surgeons.

2. Service: Service to clients and referring veterinarians is an integral part of hospital duties. The successful candidate should have an interest in promoting a caseload and innovative services that will serve the teaching and service needs of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Development of continuing education programs to veterinarians and the public is encouraged.

3. Research: The successful applicant is expected to participate in scholarly activities related to the clinical service and teaching missions of the College of Veterinary Medicine. However, establishing an independent research program is not expected. Rather, collaboration with colleagues within the department, and in other departments and colleges on campus is encouraged.

Additional Requirements

The successful candidate is expected to obtain and maintain a valid Georgia veterinary license (regular or faculty). Candidates are required to be board certified or eligible for board certification in surgery (large animal).

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

It is advantageous if the applicant has evidence of clinical, laboratory, and/or didactic teaching.

To be considered for the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor (non-tenure track), candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine and have completed residency training in Large Animal Surgery (minimum of 4 years post- DVM experience) including residency training. To be considered for the rank of Clinical Associate Professor (non-tenure track), candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine, be board certified in surgery (large animal), and have a minimum of 9 years post- DVM experience (at least 5 years at the rank of clinical assistant professor or comparable training, background, and experience). To be considered for the rank of Clinical Professor (non-tenure track), candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine, be board certified in surgery (large animal), and have a minimum of 14 years post- DVM experience (at least 5 years at the rank of clinical associate professor or comparable training, background, and experience).
