County of Santa Clara Health System (CSHS), a large public teaching healthcare system, affiliated with Stanford University School of Medicine, is seeking full-time BE/BC Custody Psychiatrists and BE/BC Primary Care Psychiatrists, to join our dynamic team at Santa Clara County jail located in San Jose and within Primary Care Behavioral Health Services.

About the organization

County of Santa Clara Health System (CSHS) is the second-largest County-owned health and hospital system in California and is committed to improving the health of the 1.9 million people of Santa Clara County. CSHS is comprised of three hospitals:  Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC - a 731-bed central hospital), O’Connor Hospital (OCH - 358 licensed beds), and Saint Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH – 93 licensed beds); in addition CSHS includes a large primary care network comprised of eleven health centers throughout the County, several urgent care clinics, a broad-range of specialty services in our Valley Specialty Center, comprehensive dental services, a large behavioral health department, public health, EMS, and Valley Health Plan.  

SCVMC itself hosts four residency and one fellowship training programs and partners with Stanford University Medical Center for the training of residents and fellows in many Stanford-based specialties.  SCVMC also features a Level 1 Trauma Center, Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, ABA verified Burn Center, Primary Stroke Center, and a nationally recognized CARF-accredited Rehabilitation Center.  Owing to its geographic location and specialty offerings, SCVMC not only serves the County, but also the larger region.  

Providers in our health system also have the opportunity to use our integrated electronic health record (Epic), which brings together system-wide patient information.   The Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) recognized SCVMC for achieving its highest level of success (Stage 7), based on our continuous innovation and optimization of our inpatient and outpatient EHR.

About the Department

The Department of Psychiatry is staffed with qualified credentialed physicians, psychologists, advanced practice providers, and licensed clinical social workers who provide prevention, education, and treatment to all residents of Santa Clara County, regardless of ability to pay.

The Department of Psychiatry staffs a 24/7 psychiatric emergency room (EPS), a seven-day per week mental health urgent care clinic, where walk-in crisis intervention is available, two inpatient units at the hospital, and a number of adult and child/adolescent mental health and substance treatment clinics at various geographically convenient locations in the county.

About the Division

Our Division of Custody Health services is providing integrated care to our population including internal/family medicine, Mental health, Dental care, OB/GYN, rehabilitation medicine, optometry and more. The mental health division within custody health services employs 13 providers currently. Our division also includes 59 clinicians (LMFT, MFT, LCSW, CSW) who are providing therapy, case management and discharge planning. We have a team of 8 psychologists that provide therapy, risk evaluations, neuropsychological and psychological testing. The division is ever evolving and expanding. As custody psychiatrist you will have the opportunity to be a part of quality improvement and initiatives that focus on providing better more effective care to our patient population and improving the wellbeing of stuff.  

About the Positions

Full-time Custody Psychiatrist: This position requires board certification in psychiatry or board eligible with a clear plan to get certified. The preferred candidate will have previous experience working in custody psychiatry and/ or acute inpatient psychiatry service. The unit’s capacity is 41 beds. There are 3 psychiatrists covering the unit 7AM-5PM during weekdays, weekends, and holidays. There are 2 case managers, 1 psychologist, and a full nursing staff working in the unit.

Full-time, part-time, or extra help General Psychiatrist: We have positions in Valley Health Center in Gilroy and South County, Central Wellness and Benefits Clinic, Valley Homeless Health Program, PACE, Narvaez Mental Health, and others are available.

About compensation and benefits

We offer competitive compensation, generous comprehensive benefit package including: 54 days of paid time off per year (36 days of annual leave, 5 days of CME, and 13 holidays), $4500 educational funds, retirement, paid malpractice (with tail coverage), and health insurance.
