Brakewell Steel, Inc. is one of the most reputable and versatile service-oriented fabricators in the northeast, specializing in Steel Buildings, Stairs, curved stairs, Rails,  and Infrastructure Work. Under the direction of the Quality Supervisor, the Certified Weld Inspector’s primary function will be to authorize production after successful weld inspection. Secondarily, the CWI will also perform quality technician duties including the inspection of First Article (FA) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) products with the associated reporting. The CWI will work to ensure that the products shipped meet the expectations of the customer and are delivered right the first time including any of the associated identification and documentation requirements.


  • Conducts D1.1 and D1.5 testing for new hires, or the recertification of welders as needed.
  • Perform visual inspections (VT) of finished welds in process and on completed jobs.
  • Check weld machine setup and the welding techniques of welders on work in progress.
  • Provide necessary assistance to welders who do not meet minimum quality and efficiency requirements so they again meet/exceed quality and efficiency levels.
  • Maintain records, inspection results, and welder performance documentation.
  • Record the results of tests and welding inspections.
  • Ensure all welding is performed in conformance with applicable welding codes, company standards, and customer requirements.
  • Assist with performing various NDT examination and documentation.
  • Has the authority to stop production when nonconforming parts are detected.
  • Perform final QC inspections of finished products.
  • Ensure all QC operations are carried out in a timely manner.

Skills Required:

  • Must have a thorough knowledge of welding practices, codes, and procedures per AWS D1.1 and D1.5
  • Must be familiar with the steel fabrication processes and be comfortable working in a welding shop environment
  • Must be able to interpret shop drawings and welding symbols
  • Must be familiar with various forms of NDT examination and documentation
  • Must be able to generate and process inspection reports in an expeditious and thorough manner
  • Must have good communication and organizational skills;
    • With the Plant Manager and Project Managers to determine the specific requirements of a given work order, including the scope of work, deliverables, schedules, and budget for a particular assignment
    • To determine that the specific services provided are performed in accordance with the project requirement and contract with the client
    • To maintain a positive relationship between the fabrication facility and the client
    • To resolve scheduling issues between the fabrication personnel, contractors, and other third parties
  • Must be proficient in basic computer equipment including cell phones, and digital cameras
  • Must have the ability to multi-task and properly execute multiple simultaneous assignments without sacrificing the efficiency or quality of the work

  • Detail oriented with a dedication to the quality control and quality assurance process; ability to understand and read complex design and fabrication plans and specifications

Education Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, GED or similar.
  • College Degree (Associates Degree) or vocational training a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience in a related production leadership role in a manufacturing environment.
  • Must possess current American Welding Society-Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certificate
