Research and Clinical Position at Hebrew SeniorLife and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
The Geriatric Specialist/Assistant Scientist would conduct supervised research to improve measurement of frailty and health outcomes of older adults at risk or with frailty at the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife. Additionally the specialist would have clinical activities at BIDMC identifying and caring for patients at risk or with frailty in the outpatient and hospital settings, including perioperative frailty assessment and management. This role includes teaching responsibilities with the Harvard Medical School Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine.
Core Competencies
The ideal candidate will provide expert medical care for geriatric patients, conduct comprehensive geriatric evaluations (including frailty assessment), prescribe individualized and goal concordant interventions, and collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure seamless patient care. They must effectively direct interdisciplinary clinical teams and support staff, and participate in on-call duties, including weekend coverage. Additionally, the candidate must have skills to conduct patient-oriented aging research in a supervised environment with the potential to develop into an independent investigator.
Key Responsibilities
The candidate will conduct rigorous, patient-oriented aging research. Research findings will be disseminated through high impact journals and conference presentations. It is expected that the candidate will apply for and obtain research funding. The candidate will also perform comprehensive medical examinations, assessments, diagnoses, and treatments for older adults. Responsibilities will include performing peri-operative assessments and ordering treatment regimens, as well as primary care while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the highest standard of care. The candidate will be expected to document patient encounters using our electronic medical record system and adhere to established policies and quality improvement objectives. Additionally, they will train and supervise medical students, residents, and fellows, fostering their development in geriatric medicine. Engaging in medical staff quality improvement activities and contributing to care plan meetings are essential components of the position. Furthermore, the candidate will perform additional duties as assigned to support the overall mission and goals of Hebrew SeniorLife and BIDMC.
Qualifications
Education: MD or DO degree; completion of an internal medicine or family practice residency (minimum three years) and completion of a geriatric medicine fellowship. Additional research training is ideal. License: Valid and unrestricted Massachusetts Medical License. Certification: BC/BE in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine or equivalent; BC/BE in Geriatric Medicine or equivalent. Federal DEA Certification and CPR/BLS/ACLS as required.
The successful applicant will be eligible for a faculty appointment at the appropriate rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School.
Experience in geriatric medicine; proficiency in outpatient and inpatient medical care; knowledge of quality, safety, and infection control standards; experience in aging research, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications. Ability to work independently and in a team, and to supervise and train clinical professionals and students.
