Role Snapshot
- Full-time leadership role supporting a specialty + emergency hospital medical support team.
- Hands-on: regularly supports patient care and team workflow on the floor, as needed.
- Owns staffing and scheduling for technicians/assistants, including coverage planning and time-off approval.
- Leads hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, and performance expectations for the medical support team.
- Schedule: full-time, primarily day shift; flexibility needed for a few weekends per month, minimum of 2-3 holidays per year, and occasional evening/overnight shifts. Minimal travel (up to 10%).

You build strong medical support teams through clear expectations, coaching, and practical training, and you’re comfortable jumping on the floor when needed to keep patient care moving. You bring sound judgment, strong communication, and a collaborative approach-partnering with hospital leadership to maintain efficient operations and a positive, values-driven culture.
Your Experience & Skills
Must-have
- 5+ years of experience in the veterinary field (specialty/emergency strongly preferred).
- Required: 3-5 years of people leadership (supervisor/manager/lead) experience.
- Ability to coach, train, and develop team members; comfortable with performance expectations and feedback.
- Strong organization and prioritization skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Clear, professional communication with doctors, team members, and pet owners; maintains confidentiality.
- Comfortable with animal handling and basic husbandry (walking, feeding, medication administration).
Nice-to-have
- Associate degree in veterinary technology.
- Credentialed technician (RVT/CVT/LVT).
- Advanced veterinary technician skillset (e.g., anesthesia, triage, critical care monitoring) and comfort supporting specialty services.

Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialists San Antonio has recently expanded to a beautiful, modern facility designed to provide exceptional veterinary specialty medicine alongside renowned emergency care. Our state-of-the-art equipment includes advanced diagnostic tools such as CT, MRI, ultrasound, and endoscopy, as well as a linear accelerator and a pulmonetic ventilator for critical care. We also offer a dedicated full pharmacy and an in-house blood bank to ensure comprehensive care for our patients. Responsibilities:
Leading with Your Head
- Use sound judgment to solve problems, remove inefficiencies, and make inclusive decisions that support hospital performance.
- Partner with the Medical Director, Hospital Administrator, and leadership team to align priorities, communicate updates, and maintain consistent operations.
- Own technician/assistant staffing: build schedules, approve time off, manage overtime, and proactively address coverage gaps.
- Support timely payroll through accurate timekeeping practices and follow-up.
- Create, revise, and implement SOPs and workflows; address performance or process breakdowns that impact efficiency and care.
- Help maintain a facility that is clean, organized, and visually appealing for clients and team members.
Leading with Your Heart
- Foster a respectful, inclusive culture that supports engagement, retention, and strong team communication.
- Stay connected to team wellbeing through regular check-ins; identify needs early and connect team members to appropriate support.
- Address emergent issues (including client escalations and urgent requests) to support a positive client experience.
- Partner with hospital management to document and escalate staff issues when needed and ensure timely resolution.
- Lead interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training for medical support team members.
- Serve as a Thrive ambassador-modeling expectations and supporting adoption of company initiatives and programs.
Leading with Your Hands
- Support patient care and team workflow by delegating effectively and stepping into primary nursing/technical duties when needed.
- Assess skills, identify gaps, and build individualized training plans to promote competence and confidence.
- Provide consistent feedback, coaching, mentoring, and on-the-job education aligned to Thrive guidelines and hospital standards.
- In coordination with the Medical Director and Hospital Administrator, maintain productive workflow to meet patient and pet parent needs.
Work Environment
The work environment described below is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. The essential functions of this role can be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Work environment includes environmentally controlled office and hospital/clinic treatment environment; rarely requires working outdoors or indoors in non-controlled conditions.
- Exposure to moderate noise level; occasional exposure to sounds and loud noises that may be distracting or uncomfortable.
- Exposure to contaminants such as dust, odors, and animal waste.
- Exposure to animal encounters includes the potential for bites, cuts, scratches, and potential exposure to contagious diseases or infections.
- Work environments follow Federal and State animal health laws and regulations including OSHA and DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency).
- Must be willing to work extended or irregular hours under high-pressure conditions while maintaining composure.
- This position requires the ability to walk, bend, stand, and reach frequently and for extended periods during a shift.
- Ability to accurately review and maintain written and electronic records and follow written directions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members and clients in person and by telephone.
- Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing office equipment and hospital equipment such as laboratory equipment, radiology equipment, etc.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds
- This position requires the ability to work a 40-hour work week, primarily day shift, with flexibility for a few weekends per month, a minimum 2-3 holidays per year, and occasional evening/overnight hours. Up to 10% travel time may be required.
