Description
The Leuthold Group is an asset management firm and a thought leader providing original and insightful investment research to an institutional audience. As a member of Leuthold’s investment team, this position will be responsible for integrating the firm’s research topics and portfolio positioning into our publishing and client service activities. The Portfolio Strategist will produce original research, timely insights, and differentiated views covering macroeconomic, financial market, and asset class perspectives. This role also serves as the investment team’s primary resource for communicating our strategic thoughts to clients, the media, and other public forums.
Core Responsibilities
Market & Macro Strategy
Evaluate macroeconomic trends, market regimes, monetary and fiscal policy, and asset class positioning.
Analyze market dynamics across equities, credit, forex, commodities, and alternatives.
Identify secular themes, regime shifts, cyclical inflection points, and key market risks.
Contribute to investment analysis, portfolio construction, scenario assessment, and risk discussions.
Monitor market valuations, earnings trends, liquidity conditions, and sentiment indicators.
Generate proprietary investment ideas through fundamental, quantitative, and macro research.
Research & Publications
Conduct cross-asset market research and generate analysis on topical and thematic macro and market issues.
Integrate portfolio positioning, valuation, sentiment, and macro indicators into market views.
Translate complex market dynamics into clear, decision-relevant narratives.
Author regular market commentaries, white papers, strategy updates, quarterly outlooks, and thematic research for institutional clients.
Present strategic views to institutional clients and contribute to the firm’s public market commentary and media engagement.
Requirements
Required Skills
This role requires a strong understanding of capital markets, global asset classes, macroeconomics, investor behavior, portfolio theory, and risk management.
Experience with asset allocation frameworks, market history, regime analysis, portfolio management, and factor/risk models.
Comfortable working with market data, scenario analysis, and historical backtests.
Ability to synthesize economic data, market signals, and investor behavior into actionable insights and clear, compelling narratives.
Exceptional writing skills with a clear, concise, and authoritative institutional tone.
Ability to explain complex market dynamics to sophisticated investors.
High intellectual curiosity and the ability to creatively develop new research topics.
Qualifications
10+ years of experience in investment strategy, macro research, asset allocation, institutional research publishing, and client support.
Deep understanding of global financial markets and macroeconomic frameworks.
Exceptional analytical, writing and presentation skills.
Strong independent judgment and intellectual curiosity, and significant experience in organizing research findings into coherent investment commentaries.
CFA, CAIA, or similar designations preferred but not required.
Familiarity with typical financial data resources such as Bloomberg, FactSet, Morningstar, Excel, and comparable software.
